Our focus is to “hang out” with Jesus and His life flows through us by the Holy Spirit.
In the context of John 14 Jesus is promising the Holy Spirit, vs. 16 (a promise He fulfills in John 20, which we are looking at this week at the Edge, 9/26). The Holy Spirit is the means to help us, or rather for God to work through us, achieving verse 15, “If you Love me, you will obey what I command”.
Regarding the process of aiding, remaining or “hanging out” with Jesus, Jesus tells is that apart from Him we can do nothing (John 15:4,5)!
So when we get to John 15 we see what His command is, “remain in My love” (vs. 9) and “My command is this: love each other as I have loved you” (vs. 12). The only way for this to happen is to “hang out” with Jesus (stay in His love) and to have His life flow through us as the Holy Spirit helps; it is not of our own doing.
So yes Ed, you are correct, “as we focus on loving (and being loved by) Him, we will keep His commands”.
