Devotions For Friday, Christmas Eve

Opening
Out of the depths we cry to you, O Lord. Lord, hear our voice! Let your ears be attentive to the voice of Your people as we bring our supplications before You! If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities, Lord, who could stand? But there is forgiveness with you, so that you may be revered. We wait for the Lord, our soul waits, and in his word we hope. In You is steadfast love, and the only great power to redeem. Save us from our iniquities.
From Psalm 130

Observe a period of silence

Scripture
Luke 2:1-7 In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to his own town to register. So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. (NIV)
Meditation
Lord, this bare island, make it a place of peace. Here be the peace of those who do Thy will. Here be the peace of brother serving man. Here be the peace of holy monks obeying. Here be the peace of praise by dark and day. Be this Island Thy Holy Island. I, Lord, Thy servant, Aidan, make this prayer. Be it Thy care. Amen.

The Collect
Eternal Father, you gave to your incarnate Son the holy name of Jesus to be the sign of our salvation: plant in every heart. We pray, the love of Him who is the Savior of the world, our Lord Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

The flow of this devotion represents the movement of salvation. In the opening we acknowledge our complete dependence on God for salvation. We remember, in the Scripture reading, the means of that process included the birth of Jesus as a baby. Then we flow into the effects of the gospel and witnessing in St. Aidan’s meditation prayer. As we are reminded of our Triune God, in the collect, we pray that the movement of salvation continues strong unto the day of glory!
